This invention provides a geometric crowdsourced update method for HD maps, applied to geofenced areas outside the operational design domain (ODD) of an autonomous driving system. By comparing the crowdsourced map within a geofence against an HD map with known geometric problems, the algorithm outputs geometric change sources for the lane-line elements of the HD map within the geofence. These lane-line geometric change sources are then used to complete the geometric update of the HD map within the geofence that represents an autonomous-driving function-design disabled area. Once the crowdsourced geometric update is complete, the geofenced area can transition from being outside the operational design domain to becoming a function-design enabled area of the autonomous driving system, thereby increasing the geographic availability of the autonomous driving system.
